Former Israeli Intelligence Service Checks in on CIS situation
10.06.2009
Liaison Office "Nativ" conducts regional meetings in Chisinau and in St. Petersburg, summing up its annual activities in the European part of the former USSR. How did the financial crisis influence on the activities of this structure, and what plans does "Nativ" have for next year?
As the IzRus portal found out, the leadership of "Nativ" is holding regional meetings on the territory of the CIS countries for the first time this year. Before this, "Nativ," which used to be one of the Israeli secret services, annually gathered its coordinators from the FSU in Israel.
On May 7 in Chisinau, the first regional meeting of this organization's coordinators was opened, for people responsible for activities in Moldova and Ukraine. It will continue until June 9, after which the delegation of the Bureau managers, led by Naomi Ben-Ami, will go to the northern Russian capital. In St. Petersburg they will spend three more days - from June 10 to 12, and discuss the situation with the coordinators working in Russia, Belarus and the Baltic countries. The Head of "Nativ" coordinators in Ukraine is Felix Mindel, and the Russian department of the Bureau operates under the leadership of Sasha Seraya.
As noted by the sources of the IzRus portal, at the meetings the coordinators will consider the situation over the last year in the field. In addition to this, they will also discuss local problems in each state, as well as the effects of the economic crisis both on the overall environment and on
the activities of Bureau representatives. The main topic for discussion will be an opportunity and methods of establishing contacts with the "target audience" - potential repatriates.
It is emphasized that this audience is not particularly familiar with the situation in Israel, and one of the key tasks of "Nativ" is to change this situation. Also, the Bureau plans to expand its youth programs by launching joint projects with a number of organizations, such as Ukrainian scouts. Besides, "Nativ" is going to attract to their activities more Jewish students in various universities. In particular, for these purposes the Bureau has decided to make an emphasis on the development of its web site, making it more interesting for the Russian-speaking Jewish youth abroad.
