Front Page of Polish Newspaper: “How to Recognize a Jew”
14.03.2019, Jews and Society A extreme right-wing nationalistic Polish newspaper ran an article on its front page with instructions to readers on “how to recognize a Jew.”
The Polish-language weekly Tylko Polska, or “Only Poland,” lists on its front page “names, anthropological features, expressions, appearances, character traits, methods of operation” and “disinformation activities.” The article in the rabidly-antisemitic publication tells readers, “How to defeat them? This cannot go on!”
Only Poland is published by Leszek Bubl, a nationalist political candidate, an antisemitic Holocaust-denier who promotes conspiracy theories blaming the Jews for ruining Poland. Bubel describes himself in interviews as “the chief anti-Semite of the Republic of Poland.” His rancid newspaper to spot and mark the Jews of Poland was distributed in Sejm at the Polish parliament together with other newspapers and periodicals.
Michał Kamiński, a conservative lawmaker, protested the article and its presence at the parliament, Polsat news reported. The Sejm Information Center responded by saying that “the Chancellery of the Sejm will request the publication’s removal from the press kit.”
Polish governments have struggled to acknowledge their part in the destruction of Polish Jewry. Before the second world war, Poland was home to one of the world’s largest Jewish communities, which was wiped out by the Nazis. Many Poles do not accept clear research showing that thousands of their people also participated in the Holocaust against the Jews, including at the Auschwitz death camp, which is located in Poland.
Critics accuse the nationalist government in Poland of whitewashing times when the Polish government collaborated with the Nazis. Israel complained to Warsaw last year when Polish legislators introduced a law that would have made the use of phrases such as “Polish death camps” like Auschwitz punishable by up to three years in prison.
Last month, Poland cancelled participation in an international summit in Jerusalem after Yisrael Katz, Israel’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, accused the Polish people of harboring “innate” antisemitism. Katz told Israel’s Army Radio that he wanted to maintain good relations with Poland, but went on to say that “historical truth cannot be changed. Many Poles collaborated with the Nazis and took part in the destruction of the Jews during the Holocaust … Antisemitism was innate among the Poles before the Holocaust, during it and after it too.”
