EAJC condolences to the family and colleagues of Mervyn Smith
17.11.2014, Region The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress with sadness learned of the death of Mervyn Smith, long-time leader of the South African Jewish community, who stood at the origins of the African Jewish Congress, member of the board of the World Jewish Congress.
Mervyn Smith took an active part in the work on the restitution of Jewish communal property appropriated by the Nazis, was а Сhairman of the Board of Trustees of the South African Holocaust Foundation. Thanks to his enthusiasm and firm position the Jews of South Africa condemned the apartheid system. Thousands of people are grateful for his efforts to bring justice.
Thanks to Mervyn Smith, friendly relations between the Eurj-Asian Jewish Congress and the Jewish organizations in South Africa were established. EAJC delegations visited South Africa, invariably experienced the warm hospitality of Mervyn and his colleagues.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of Mervyn Smith. Let his memory be blessed.
